I was watching the movie "Bheeshma" in telugu on a Sunday. Needless to say, the movie was damn thought provoking, considering the subject, Bheeshma, one of the sturdiest charecters known to mankind.
Just for a recap:
Bheeshma decides to get his step bro, Vichitraveerya married. He wages a war with a king by name Kasi Raju, who has 3 daughters- Amba, Ambika, Ambalika. He captures the princesses and takes them to his kingdom to make them the wives of his bro. The first lady Amba, resists this move as she was in love with another man called salva. Bheeshma releases her to seek her own life. Salva rejects Amba on the pretext that she is captured by 'another man'. Amba returns and seeks to marry Bheeshma, instead of his bro. Bheeshma, being a vowed life time bachelor and celibate, denies her proposal. Amba now harbors a great revenge against Bheeshma for disturbing the course of her life. This revenge prompts her for a penance which wins her the solace of 'being responsible for Bheeshma's death'. She reincarnates as Sikhandi, a woman turned man.
In the great battle of Kurukshetra, Bheeshma goes on as an unbridled warrior and leaves no option to the Pandavas. At this time, inorder to face and conquer Bheeshma, the Pandavas take the help of Sikhandi alias Amba, whom Bheeshma does not choose to fight. Thus they bring down the mighty warrior.
Coming to the context, I am not sure if all those who love and adore Bheeshma would be able to appreciate Amba's decision on reincarnating as Sikhandi to bring about the 'fall of Bheeshma'.
As a normal woman with flesh and blood, Amba makes colorful plans for her life with her loved one. She is naturally very deeply disappointed and hurt that her dreams were broken by another man, who again refuses to satiate her, for what so ever reasons. Her anger is then directed towards Bheeshma, who caused this, again, with what so ever intentions or knowledge. Amba's anger is justified, taking into consideration her plight.
Bheeshma's refusal is also justified, considering the priorities he established for his life.
None of them is wrong here. Right Vs Right. Coming to the 'fall of Bheeshma' in th war of Kurukshetra, his 'fall' was necessary, inevitable, if ever the Pandavas were to win! The Pandavas HAD to win, considering Dharma triumphs, come what may.
Hence, Amba's raw feelings of revenge actually helped in the triumph of Dharma. All is well in the big picture!
